Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai has officially revealed details on the future of Nintendo’s flagship fighter with the announcement of the second Fighters Pass.
With the first Fighters Pass now complete with the announcement of Fire Emblem’s Byleth joining the massive roster, many were eagerly awaiting what the future would hold. During the announcement, Sakurai discussed future content and stated that while he believed “one or two” additional fighters would suffice, even more than expected were in development.
“Fighters Pass Volume 2” will feature six new upcoming characters. Each character can be purchased individually as “Challenger Packs.” The formula is pretty much the same as the prior pass, but with one extra character.
This means that fans can still hope that popular favorites such as Halo’s Master Chief and Devil May Cry’s Dante still make the cut.
When can you pre-order Fighters Pass Volume 2?
Players will be able to pre-purchase the pass on January 28, 2020. It should be noted, that this is the same time that Byleth will be available for download.
Additionally, all Challenger Packs will be released by December 31, 2021, so Smash Ultimate should have quite a long life with future updates. Of course, that is just a placeholder date, so it’s possible all the fighters are released prior to that date.

Sakurai also stated that like the first Fighter Pass, the new additions have already been decided. The Byleth announcement video was filmed in November, so Nintendo has known for months what the six characters will be.
“Even if I receive many requests regarding potential candidates on Twitter, I’m afraid it will be very hard to consider them,” the series creator said.
Finally, if you pre-order the pass, players will gain access to a special Mii Swordfighter costume: The Ancient Soldier from The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild.
It’s unclear if like the first pass, all DLC fighters will come with a unique stage. We expect that information to be revealed once it is officially available for pre-order.
It will be interesting to see who the next fighters are and just what the future will hold after the second pass concludes. Will there be a Volume 3? Only time will tell.
