Many Smash Bros Ultimate fans were upset when the fighting game’s fifth DLC character was absent from The Game Awards on December 12, but there are still some upcoming events where Nintendo could unveil the mysterious fighter.
What we do know for sure is that the fighter is scheduled to release no later than February 29, 2020 leaving some room for Nintendo to sneak in an announcement at one of the following events.
EVO Japan and Genesis 7
Unfortunately for fans of competitive Smash, the two majors to begin 2020 fall on the same weekend from January 24-26.
While Nintendo has never announced a fighter at a tournament before, if they were ever going to, this would be the time and place to do so, especially if they can make it happen simultaneously at both EVO Japan and Genesis.
The big N has taken inspiration from other companies and are a shell of their former self that would never dare to do DLC or introduce a subscription online service so the leap for Nintendo to announce a character at a major tournament isn’t that far fetched.
With EVO in Japan and Genesis in California, 17 hours separate the two. Luckily, there are a few hours in the day where players would be in attendance at both events.
Given the distance from the events and the fighter’s scheduled release, there would be ample time to hype fans up for the new fighter before they are available for download.

A Nintendo Direct
This really is a simplistic answer, but it’s also a safe possibility. Nintendo has announced fighters at their Nintendo Direct events in the past and doing one in January once the Christmas rush has died down would make sense.
In addition to a new fighter, this would also be a good chance for Nintendo to officially announce a second Fighters Pass or go more in depth with their 2020 plans for Smash.
Who is the fifth DLC fighter?
So far, leakers have provided several hints as to the identity of the upcoming fighter through a series of deconfirms. As Dexerto has previously reported, many fan-favorites such as Geno from Super Mario RPG, Devil May Cry’s Dante, Tracer from Overwatch and many more have all been debunked by leakers.
There’s many fighters still on the table and we have a full rundown on who the next fighter could end up being.
The final character in this Fighters Pass will soon be playable, but we’re all still longing to see who it will be. Hopefully we won’t have that much longer to wait as Genesis 7 and EVO Japan are in January and a Nintendo Direct could be thrown our way at any moment.
