Football fans on social media were expressing their surprise at who Paul Merson supports on Saturday afternoon.
Despite being an Arsenal legend, having played for the Gunners for 12 years between 1985 and 1997, he has another club close to his heart.
Merson is, in fact, a Chelsea supporter, as many fans found out last year when he shared a post on X saying: ‘Come on you Blues’.
And Merson’s allegiance to the Stamford Bridge club emerged again on Saturday as a tweet from Sky Sports on Instagram referred to him as ‘Chelsea fan Paul Merson’.
Although Merson supporting Chelsea is not new information, plenty of fans on Instagram were clearly finding it out for the first time.
‘I’m sorry, Chelsea fan Paul Merson?’ one person wrote, while another commented ‘I thought Merson supports Arsenal’.
At least Merson will not have to choose between favouring Chelsea or Arsenal when it comes to the title race this season, with Chelsea already 23 points off league leaders Liverpool.

One club Merson does think will be in the title race, though, is Tottenham. Speaking ahead of Saturday’s Premier League schedule, he said: “I think Tottenham have got some good fixtures if I’m being honest I really do. You’ve got to win those games I know you have but it’s better than playing Man City away and teams like that every week.
“They’ve got winnable games and at the moment I think Tottenham are in it as well, I really do.
“They could win their next five or six games. Liverpool have got to play Man City in a couple of weeks and all of a sudden it changes around again.
“I think this could go to the wire again. It was massive Arsenal winning 6-0 last week because that goal difference before the West Ham game was another point.
“Now they’re back in it at three goals. I think you’ve got three top teams up there but I’m not going to count Tottenham out. I’ve seen their games and they’re worryingly good.”
