Since Starfield’s vehicle update also lets the REV-8 float on water, players want PC modders to introduce boat mechanics.
On Tuesday, August 20, Bethesda Game Studios released a Starfield patch that added the REV-8 land vehicle. This long-awaited addition features customization options, protective armor, boosters, and a mounted turret.
With the rover, players can explore rough terrain at a much quicker speed and even sail through the air if they can get enough height from a jump.
Shortly after the update’s launch, Starfield player and Reddit user TopDesert_ace discovered the “REV-8 is amphibious,” meaning the vehicle is suited for water traversal.
The Redditor shared a clip of the rover floating along on a body of water, doing so effectively albeit at a snail’s pace.
Since Starfield’s lacking underwater content does not allow for much water exploration, the REV-8’s floating capabilities seem to open up a world of possibilities.
But fans responding to the Reddit thread have expressed more interest in what PC modders could accomplish with Starfield’s vehicle update. In particular, many have their fingers crossed for boating mods of some kind.

“Okay, modders boat time,” reads one highly upvoted comment in the thread.
Another excited person wrote in all caps, “The buggy floating on water means modders can make boats.”
In addition, several people in the comments noted that Starfield locations such as the floating city of Neon already have “sturdy-looking boats” that modders could use.
Such fan-made content isn’t beyond the realm of possibility. As pointed out in another Reddit post, one PC modder has already built a NASA Lunar Rover based on Starfield’s newly released vehicle update. Thus, functioning boat mods could go live sooner rather than later.
But whether or not Bethesda intends to add more water-based mechanics itself remains a mystery. The studio is currently hard at work on Shattered Space, the story expansion hitting PC and Xbox on September 30, 2024.
