One Reddit user has taken their love of the transparent plastic tech from the early 00s and created the ultimate Y2K-looking gaming setup.
Nostalgia is a powerful feeling. We have access to some of the most high-powered gaming PCs money can buy, and yet we’re still fascinated by the tech of yesterday. Some even go so far as to replicate the look of the gaming setups we grew up with. In the name of nostalgia, the possibilities are endless.
One Redditor has chosen to capture the nostalgia of the Y2K age of semi-transparent plastic hardware. By sourcing both modern and older accessories, they’ve created a setup that looks straight out of the early 2000s.
Semi-transparent plastic tech is making a comeback
Naming it their ‘Y2K translucent blue setup1, r/retrobattlestations user ChrisPeterJ shared three images of their gorgeous, nostalgic gaming setup. The setup looks straight out of the 00s, featuring a unison of matching blue transparent plastic hardware. Even the internals of the PC itself glow blue.
“Work in progress of me, trying to build a PC only from translucent/blue parts”, ChrisPeterJ explained.
According to the Reddit user, the Y2K setup includes the Optimus Young III PC case with a Pentium III 1GHz CPU, with matching TDK CD drives and IDE Cooler Master cables. To keep in with the delightfully retro theming, they included a matching Yahoo internet keyboard and blue transparent wired PC mouse. Even an official clear blue PlayStation DualShock controller, and clear Game Boy Advance can be spotted amongst the retro setup.

ChrisPeterJ went to great lengths to ensure every inch of the setup captures the look of early 00’s transparent tech. An effort that many fellow r/retrobattlestation Reddit users were delighted to behold.
Fellow Reddit user NinjaKitty stated, “This is the setup of my dreams when I was a kid.”
Meanwhile, user aryxs3m shared, “I forgot how cool was translucent blue. awesome setup.”
According to ChrisPeterJ this setup is still a “work in progress” with them actively sourcing matching speakers, among a “better fitting” display. Although not complete, the Y2K-themed gaming setup is nevertheless an impressive callback to the days when transparent plastic hardware reigned supreme.
