Social Media platform Threads has now broken through to over 100 million registered users since its launch on July 5.
Threads, a Twitter competitor by Instagram was only launched last week. However, the rate of user adoption has been incredibly fast. Even though sign-up to the platform is limited to iOS and Android currently, with no web-accessible version yet, the rate of user adoption has been unprecedented.
Threads has already attained over 100 million users barely a week after its public launch. While a handful of influencers and press had early access to the platform, the sheer number of users signing up could be thanks to the platform’s deep integration with Instagram.
Firstly, if you already have an Instagram account, then all you need to do is to download the Threads app. Then, it will carry over all of your data, and following history. You are also able to automatically follow those you already know via Instagram, allowing mass adoption at an unprecedented scale.
Mark Zuckerberg enthuses about high Threads user count
Mark Zuckerberg has been offering updates on how many users have joined Threads since it went public on July 5. Most recently, the founder has shared the latest user count update, which is now at 100 million sign-ups. The rate of adoption is staggering, and Zuckerberg commented that the figure was “Way beyond our expectations” in a post.
The update to 100 million users has come from tracking the Threads badge numbers, which lets users know what number they were to sign up to the platform.
Zuckerberg says “we’ve got a lot of work ahead” to build out the app, with many users mentioning various issues on the site.
Dexerto has observed that the user numbers have now surpassed 100 million at the time of writing, and it’s likely that as more regions find that the app has launched, this number will continue to rise.
Some users have been complaining about the way the timeline is presented, with no option to only display content from people you are following, in addition to using multiple accounts on a single device. This is just the beginning for Threads, and any user on the platform will clearly be able to tell that it is still early for Zuckerberg and the company to claim yet another Social Media scalp.

Instagram could be driving sign-ups
Instagram could be a primary driver of Threads’ adoption. This is due to a badge assigned underneath your Instagram profile picture with a number.
Instagram could be creating a coveting of a “low” number on the platform in order to spur users to get signed up on Threads, as what’s cooler than having a lower number than your friends on a hot, new social media platform?
With 100 million users however, it seems that if you wanted a Threads badge with a low user count, you might be out of luck for now. You’re already a little bit too late to be the envy of all of your friends.
With Threads also planning to make use of the “Fediverse”, it’s possible that other users on networks like Mastodon could also theoretically interact with users on Threads, too. But, in its current state, Threads does not have this functionality quite yet. But, according to the developers, it could still be on the way.
They are working on improving the experience
The developers behind Threads are also still working on making sure that the platform gets new features as time goes on. With so many users wanting new features, it seems like the team will have their work cut out for them, especially as Threads has now amassed a huge number of users in such a short time span.
