The Mean Girls musical adaption has just hit the big screens, so here’s what the movie has made so far at the domestic box office.
It’s Wednesday, so put on some pink, because Mean Girls is back on the big screen. And this time, it’s brought a bunch of musical numbers with it.
Based on the 2004 movie of the same name by Tina Fey, this new musical movie is receiving mixed reception by critics. As we wrote in our own review: “Mean Girls: The Musical has always had its flaws, but seeing it in movie form has allowed me to note how it works… onstage. There are certainly things to enjoy in this movie, and most of the cast deserve this moment to shine, but next to the original, this flick feels plastic.”
However, criticism doesn’t necessarily reflect cash, so how well has Mean Girl performed when it comes to the box office draw?
How much has Mean Girls made?
So far, the Mean Girls musical movie has made over $32 million domestically, having only just opened internationally today. So Fetch!
The movie, which was initially planned to be sent straight to streaming, currently stands in first place at the box office, just ahead of The Beekeeper. January is often a scarce month, so both flicks can likely expect to remain in their high positions.

Mean Girls’ box office draw rings true to a lot of January opening female-led movies, such as 2013’s Mama – which opened to $32.1 million – and 2022’s Scream – which opened to $33.8 million.
Mean Girls 2024 follows this synopsis: “New student Cady Heron gets welcomed into the top of the social food chain by an elite group of popular girls called the Plastics, ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George. However, when Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina’s ex-boyfriend, she soon finds herself caught in their crosshairs.”
So far, the movie sits at a 70% Critics’ Score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The original 2004 Mean Girls debuted at $24.4 million in late April, with an ultimate draw of $86 million on just a $17 million budget. Turns out that the 2024 musical version cost more than twice as much to make – $36 million – but appears well on its way to recouping that.
Mean Girls will be available in US cinemas as of January 12, and UK cinemas as of January 17.
