American Nightmare, Netflix’s latest true crime saga, has drawn comparisons to various other cases – and now fans are recommending a “powerful” Netflix series next.
Back in 2015, a woman named Denise Huskins and her partner Aaron Quinn were ambushed at their California home. No one could’ve predicted what happened next: Huskins was kidnapped and Quinn had a series of instructions to follow. But despite Quinn’s pleas to help find her, the Vallejo Police Department treated him as the key suspect.
While new evidence continued to roll in – including photos of the kidnapper’s property and a proof of life tape – police doubled down. When Huskins was dropped off by the perpetrator two days later, she and Quinn faced accusations of creating a hoax akin to the fictional plot of Gone Girl.
Officers at Dublin, California, were able to finally bring justice to Huskins and Quinn after a similar attack unfolded nearby, and Matthew Muller was arrested for the crime. Now, Huskins, Quinn, and those involved in the case have shared their side of the story in the new Netflix documentary series American Nightmare.

One of the key themes explored in American Nightmare is injustice and misconduct in law enforcement, placing the Vallejo Police Department under intense scrutiny. This has led some fans to recommend the powerful Netflix series Unbelievable.
Unbelievable is a 2019 true crime dramatization about teen Marie Adler (Kaitlyn Dever), who reported being raped in her home, only for the police to turn on her. As the synopsis states: “Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away, detectives Grace Rasmussen and Karen Duvall (Toni Collette and Merritt Wever) meet while investigating an eerily similar pair of intruder rapes and partner to catch a potential serial rapist.”

Taking to Reddit, one fan wrote: “After watching American Nightmare, you should definitely watch Unbelievable next if you haven’t already. Powerful show. Basically affirmed my belief that American law enforcement is worthless and does more harm than good.
“As a man, I don’t think my heart can take seeing any more women being gaslit by police right after sexual assaults, though I know this happens practically daily all over the world. It’s a disgrace that I see no quick fix for. The police will never punish themselves, not without entire departments being held to the fire.”
In response, another said of American Nightmare, “I knew before the ending that none of the horrible law enforcement males were punished or disciplined in any way. Ugh. Yes, Unbelievable is also a must watch.” Another suggested watching Victim/Suspect, which Dexerto also recommended here.
Victim/Suspect is a feature-length Netflix documentary on a journalist’s investigations into numerous cases of young women who reported their sexual assaults with substantial evidence, only for the police to accuse them of lying and arrest them for filing false reports. The survivors in these cases shared similar experiences with law enforcement as those explored in Unbelievable and American Nightmare.
American Nightmare, Unbelievable, and Victim/Suspect are all available to watch on Netflix now – you can read more about the Vallejo Police Department here and Detective Mat Mustard here.
