Toph “needs” to be in Avatar: The Last Airbender say cast

One key character is missing from Netflix’s version of Avatar: The Last Airbender — and its cast say she “needs” to be included soon.

Fans of the original 2005 version of Avatar: The Last Airbender will know it’s a show stacked full of lovable and eccentric characters, each enriching the world more than the last.

For most of them, they’ve successfully made it across to the Netflix adaptation, from the Northern and Southern Water Tribes through to the truly feared Fire Nation.

However, hardcore fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender will notice that one key character is missing from new episodes, with its casting revealing that she “needs” to be brought in soon.

Avatar: The Last Airbender cast members Daniel Dae Kim and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee have revealed to Dexerto that beloved cartoon character Toph “needs” to make an appearance in future episodes — if they arrive.

Fans will recognize Toph from the original series, who is regarded as one of the most powerful earthbenders of her time. With a unique style and a tough personality, Toph adjusts the world around her to suit her specific needs, eventually travelling alongside Aang while becoming his earthbending teacher.

“We’re missing Toph, we need her. Hopefully, if we go another couple of seasons that will be really lovely to add that final element to the Aang gang, as they’re known in fandom,” Paul Sun-Hyung Lee told Dexerto.

So far, the only Earth dwelling in the Netflix series is the city of Omashu in Episode 3, which has already suffered at the hands of the Fire Nation. As Toph is from Foggy Swamp, it makes sense that she hasn’t been introduced yet — though fans already have detailed thoughts on this.

What else could we see introduced in new episodes?

Aside from Toph, the pair also went on to describe how the relationship between their own characters — Uncle Iroh and Fire Lord Ozai — has the potential to be widened. As it stands, the pair never actually cross paths in Avatar: The Last Airbender, despite being related.

“We were just talking about the fact that between Iroh and Ozai there’s a little bit of intrigue there. Iroh was supposed to be the next in line for the throne, and after he loses, he steps back and allows Ozai to take over the throne. We thought that’d be really interesting as an adaptation, it would be something worth exploring.

“It would be really cool to explore the different styles of parenting,” they continued. “Ozai is very hard, old school. Feels Zuko needs to learn his lesson. Whereas Iroh is more nurturing, giving, compassionate. Lets him make the right choices. It’s an interesting dynamic as siblings that the two of them have, and you don’t see that explored in the animated series at all.”
