Coraline is returning to theaters this year with a 3D remaster – but is a live-action remake also coming out in 2024?
Directed by The Nightmare Before Christmas’ Henry Selick – which wasn’t directed by Tim Burton, despite all of its marketing suggesting so – and based on Neil Gaiman’s novella, Coraline is one of the most iconic, beloved animated movies of the 2000s.
The film follows the eponymous girl as she discovers a hidden world behind a secret door in her new home, one that’s full of extraordinary, terrifying sights (notably, her parents have buttons for eyes).
After it was announced Coraline will be re-released in cinemas this year, rumor has it that a live-action version is also in the works – is it true?
Is a live-action Coraline remake coming out in 2024?
No, a live-action remake of Coraline won’t be released in 2024, nor is any such project in development.
Sadly, you’ve been fooled by a fake poster shared by YODA BBY ABY on Facebook, a page notorious for made-up movie news; for example, Tom Hardy’s Cape Fear remake and Michael Keaton returning in Batman Invincible.

Alongside the poster, the caption reads: “Dive into the darkly magical world of Coraline, coming to theaters October 2024, starring Marta Kessler as Coraline Jones and Kat Dennings in the dual role of her mother and the sinister ‘Other Mother.’
“This live-action adaptation of the beloved cult classic invites you to unlock a door to an alternate reality brimming with beguiling secrets and chilling surprises. Don’t miss the chance to experience the thrill and suspense of Coraline’s journey in a way you’ve never seen before.”
Demand (and division) over a potential live-action do-over of the movie emerged on social media in 2019, even earning a response from Gaiman. “All I’m seeing is literally thousands of tweets from people going ‘No!’. I think it’s had the opposite effect. If it had ever crossed anyone’s mind (it hadn’t) it would now not be a thing,” he wrote.
