As Madame Web – the new Marvel and Sony project – heads into theaters soon, star Dakota Johnson has reflected on its harsh filming.
Marvel may have kicked off its 2024 with its TV series Echo, but they will begin their film journey with a joint venture with Sony Pictures titled Madame Web.
The film follows Manhattan paramedic Cassandra Webb who suffers an accident that allows her to gain psychic abilities which she uses to protect three young women with powerful futures.
While Dakota Johnson, the star of the film, isn’t a stranger to big blockbuster films, the actress has recently revealed how filming Madame Web was a taxing experience overall.
Johnson was inexperienced with Madame Web’s special effects
While speaking with IndieWire, the future superhero star divulged her feelings towards working with high-budget special effects, something she hasn’t had a lot of experience of within her acting career.
“I’ve never really done a movie where you are on a blue screen, and there’s fake explosions going off, and someone’s going, ‘Explosion!’ and you act like there’s an explosion,” Johnson explained.

“That to me was absolutely psychotic. I was like, ‘I don’t know if this is going to be good at all! I hope that I did an okay job!’”
Johnson went on to state that she was put at ease by the film’s crew saying, “But I trusted [director SJ Clarkson]. She works so hard, and she has not taken her eyes off this movie since we started.”
The actress also revealed that she was a bit apprehensive about taking on the role as she “never saw [herself] as a superhero,” but she ended up being “mystified by [Madame Web’s] powers. I felt like, ‘Oh, I really would love to see that superhero. I would love to see a young woman whose superpower is her mind.’”
Johnson thought it was important for Cassandra to be “really human and grounded in reality” because it can be “hard to relate to someone shooting lasers out of their eyes.”
