Emilia Clarke has confirmed development on a Game of Thrones sequel series following Kit Harington’s Jon Snow.
Game of Thrones was an extraordinary show, both in its successes and failures. On one hand, it hooked the world onto hard-edged fantasy storytelling, enchanting audiences old and young with its song of ice and fire through a new era of event TV.
On the other, its final season was so disastrous that it wiped out its own cultural footprint. Controversial finales aren’t anything new – in my opinion, The Sopranos ending is one of the greatest of all time – but Game of Thrones felt like a slap in the face. It was a drama that once relished the virtues of patience and suspense, undone by rushed writing and baffling character decisions.
Yet, a comeback is brewing. Who knows whether George R.R. Martin will ever finish The Winds of Winter, but spinoffs are coming: later this year, HBO will drop its House of the Dragon prequel; and recently, news emerged of a sequel series following Jon Snow.
Emilia Clarke on Jon Snow series: “It’s happening”
In a new interview with BBC News, Clarke confirmed she’d spoken to her former co-star about the upcoming series. “[Harington] has told me about it. And I know it exists. It’s happening,” she said.
“It’s been created by Kit as far as I can understand, so he’s in it from the ground up. So what you will be watching, hopefully, if it happens, is certified by Kit Harington.”

Don’t wait on Clarke returning as Daenerys Targaryen, though. When asked if she’d consider starring in a spinoff, she laughed and said: “No, I think I’m done.”

However, the star did say she was “fascinated” by House of the Dragon. “It’s going to be weird as hell. I’m going to watch this as a fresh viewer because it’s [set] a be-jillion years before our show, so it’s going to feel different,” she added.
What will the Jon Snow series be about?
Season 8 of Game of Thrones ended with Jon Snow heading North of the Wall to live out the rest of his life in exile with the Wildlings, after killing Daenerys, his aunt. This came after he discovered his true lineage from Samwell Tarly, learning his birth name was Aegon Targaryen – meaning he was a potential heir to the Iron Throne.
News of the sequel series was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, but there’s no details regarding its plot, cast, or showrunner beyond Harington’s participation.
In addition to House of the Dragon, there are now seven Game of Thrones projects in development, including three animated prequels.
