As Griselda lands on Netflix today, all has not been well behind the scenes – but the series creator claims the lawsuit is “not his first rodeo.”
Given that Netflix’s brand-new limited series Griselda is about the rise to fame of Colombia’s most famous female drug lord, a few scrapes and bruises are to be expected along the way.
However, the drama has continued behind the scenes, with Blanco’s sole surviving son recently suing the creative team over concerns about the usage of “private narrative.”
Despite the claims, series co-creator Eric Newman has now slapped down the Netflix lawsuit, claiming that it isn’t “his first rodeo.”
Griselda creator slaps down Netflix lawsuit: “Not my first rodeo”
During a recent interview with ET, Griselda executive producers Sofia Vergara and Eric Newman both publicly responded to the news that Blanco’s surviving son, Michael Sepulveda Blanco, is suing the production for using “private narratives.”
“It’s not my first rodeo,” Newman stated. “The Escobar family made similar claims [for the TV series Narcos]. We had a very specific story we wanted to tell. I believe we told it, and I don’t think it in any way prevents someone else from telling their own version of it.”

“I’m trying to understand her from the beginning,” Vergara continued. “I started from being fascinated by her, because she achieved many things that it was impossible for a woman to achieve — even though they were horrific.”
As per a report from Rolling Stone, Blanco’s son is suing on claims that the show stole his “private artistic literary work.”
His 10-page motion goes on to expand that he “devoted several years to meticulously documenting the private narratives of his, as well as his mother’s life, with the intention of publishing a book and developing a Spanish soap opera.” It is claimed that Blanco’s two former partners shared the ideas behind Griselda to the streaming platform without consent, with their agreement allegedly dating back to 2009.
The overall aim of the motion is to invoke a temporary injunction, which is a provisional court order prohibiting an action until there has been a trial or other court action.
With all six episodes now available to stream on Netflix, we described Griselda as “Viewers will certainly enjoy Griselda in the moment, but they’ll be hard-pressed to remember it as time goes by. Sofia Vergara continuously works hard to remove herself from her Modern Family shadow, but an adequate storyline can often overshadow her progress.”
