The first Horizon: An American Saga trailer is finally here, and needless to say, the internet has some thoughts about the Kevin Costner movie.
When it was announced that Kevin Costner was leaving Yellowstone, fans were baffled. But the confusion doubled when they realized that part of the reason for his exit was due to his dedication to his ongoing passion project, Horizon: An American Saga.
Horizon will ultimately become a four-part Western epic, spanning a range of characters in the Old West amid the ongoing Civil War. It’s not something that audiences have shown any wild interest in, so the momentous $100 million project is definitely a risk for Costner – both financially, and career-wise.
Clearly, fans are aware of the audacity of Horizon. So much so, that when the first trailer dropped, they were quick to express their disbelief.
Fan reactions to the Horizon trailer are hilarious
When the trailer for Horizon: An American Saga was released on February 26, fans took to social media to make jokes about the sheer scale of Kevin Costner’s expensive Western quadrilogy.
They ranged from being excited, suspicious, and generally pretty impressed by Costner’s cinematic plans.
Of course, a lot of the comments couldn’t help but allude to the fact that Costner left Yellowstone to make Horizon. One X user wrote: “Much respect to Costner for being on one of the most popular TV series and jumping off to make four epic Westerns that could destroy him utterly. Coppola levels of commitment here.”
Another said: “Kevin Costner spending a decade building TV money/credibility to blow it on two back-to-back nine-figure big screen epic westerns that’ll gross like $90M domestic combined is an all-time GOAT move, you love to see it.”

Others alluded to Costner’s unparalleled dedication to making his passion project happen, even going so far as to get a mortgage on one of his properties.
One comment read: “KEVIN COSTNER: Honey, I’m mortgaging our home and spending $20 million on a four-part post-Civil War Western epic that will probably bomb at the box office. KEVIN COSTNER’S WIFE: Kevin, I’m leaving you if you do that. KEVIN COSTNER:…”
And there were those who made a point of noting how the epic four-part saga would probably only appeal to a very specific kind of audience, with one comment saying: “This five-film Horizon saga is gonna be like Avatar for 65+ year olds. Kevin Costner = Jim Cameron for cable TV heads.”
Another said: “Horizon: An American Saga is gonna be the cinematic event of the year for dads.”
Finally, another wave of comments pointed to the obvious question: Is Horizon: An American Saga going to be a fair depiction of Indigenous Americans? The general consensus seemed to be…probably not.
“This will either be a heater or the most racist movie made since John Wayne died,” said one user.
“Oh yeah the guy who made Dances With Wolves is totally going to make a movie that is sympathetic towards Indigenous Americans,” wrote another.
