Somebody once told me Shrek 2 is returning to theaters – here’s what you need to know about the animated sequel’s re-release.
Whoever would have thought that a grumpy ogre and his quick-witted donkey would have such widespread appeal? When Shrek dropped in 2001, it was nothing short of a global phenomenon, with its irreverent take on classic fairytales and humor that appeals to all ages.
It didn’t stop there, though as the Shrek movies kept on coming, with the direct sequel in 2004 being yet another huge success as the titular hero and his wife, Princess Fiona, find comedic complications upon their visit to the Kingdom of Far Far Away.
And now fans can continue to express their for all things Shrek thanks to the movie’s re-release, but will that cinematic reunion be happening on the big screen? Here’s everything we know.
Shrek 2 theater re-release explained
Shrek 2 re-released in theaters for the movie’s 20th anniversary on April 12, 2024.
The news was first reported by an unlikely source: the Canadian province Alberta’s government website, which includes a list of recently rated trailers, ads, and PSAs. Among the lineup is “Shrek 2 Re-Release (trailer #1).”

Shrek 2 is not the first the first movie to head back into theaters for its anniversary as The Mummy, Coraline, and Mean Girls also received another theatrical debut.
This installment of the Shrek franchise in particular proved why these anniversary movie theater outings work as Shrek 2 garnered $1.3 million dollars at the box office.
Other installments of the Shrek franchise will probably grace the big screen once again as Shrek the Third is approaching its 20 year anniversary in just three short years.
While you check out Shrek 2 in theaters, make sure you note the other great movies heading to the box office this month.
