M3GAN 2.0: Release date, cast, & more

Still from M3GANUniversal Pictures

The new queen bee of killer dolls is rebooting with a sequel in M3GAN 2.0.

The perfect balance of terror and camp, M3GAN shocked and pleasantly surprised horror fans, surging to a healthy box office return and raving critical reviews – not to mention plenty of viral videos of that dance scene.

With such a positive reception, it seemed almost a certainty that Blumhouse would greenlight a second adventure for M3GAN, especially given the uncertain fate she met in the original movie.

Is there a M3GAN 2.0 trailer?

There is no M3GAN 2.0 trailer yet. It’s likely to be released a couple of months before the film’s June 2025 release date.

What we do have is an appearance from M3GAN herself. On the big screen at the 2024 New York Comic Con, the sassy robot showed up in video form. She told the crowd she’d been “upgraded”, and that she’d see us “nerds in June.”

What do we know about the plot?

As of now, the plot of M3GAN 2.0 is still unknown, as the script is still in the works. James Wan said it will lean more heavily into AI fears.

During a November 2023 interview with Empire Magazine [via Collider], Wan revealed that he will lean into the AI anxiety angle, “It’s early yet, but M3GAN is coming back in a big way.

“The first film came just at the right time [when concerns about AI were mounting], and we’re definitely leaning into that on the next one. We’re exploring the AI universe even further.”

Since the original M3GAN doll appeared to be destroyed at the end of the original, it’s unclear whether the sequel would feature a resurrection of the original or perhaps a transfer of M3GAN’s consciousness into another doll.

Given that both Williams and McGraw are returning, it’s likely M3GAN will be seeking revenge on Gemma and Cady, perhaps looking to reconnect with her best friend.

Jason Blum, CEO of Blumhouse Productions, took to the stage at CinemaCon in April 2023 to discuss the project, and while he kept quiet about plot details, he does believe M3GAN has a long life ahead of her.

He told attendants that “hopefully we’ll see many M3GANs… to come.”
