In my restless dreams, I see that town: Silent Hill. They’re some of the best survival horror games ever made. Now, a new movie is preparing to terrify us. Here’s what we know about Return to Silent Hill, including the release window.

Everyone has their founding memory of Silent Hill, whether it’s the first time they saw Pyramid Head in 2, feeling trapped in The Room, or cowering behind a couch when you’re caught by Lisa in P.T.

After a hiatus, Konami recently announced multiple projects at its Transmission event, including a Silent Hill 2 remake, a real-time interactive series titled Silent Hill: Ascension, and two original games.

Most excitingly for us film nerds, we’re also getting Return to Silent Hill, which reboots the movie universe.

Return to Silent Hill release window

Return to Silent Hill doesn’t have an official release date, but it’s coming in 2024.

The movie is directed and co-written by Christopher Gans, the French filmmaker behind 2006’s underrated Silent Hill film.

Return to Silent Hill teaser trailer

There is no Return to Silent Hill trailer, but we do have a teaser and a behind-the-scenes sneak peek.

The teaser was unveiled during the Silent Hill Transmission showcase and featured scenes from the 2006 Silent Hill movie alongside nightmarish artwork from Return to Silent Hill.

The early sneak peek footage, which gave us a look at behind-the-scenes action on the set, was released on May 31, 2024. This footage was pretty awesome for fans, as it showed shots that were taken straight from the game.

The movie’s cast

Jeremy Irvine leads the 2024 movie cast as James Sunderland, the protagonist from the Silent Hill 2 game. And Hannah Emily Anderson is his deceased wife, Mary.

While roles like ‘Nurse’ might sound like background extras, fans know James is going to have more than a few encounters with enemies around town.

Return to Silent Hill plot

Return to Silent Hill is based on the Silent Hill 2 game’s story. It’s also “totally independent from the two previous movies made.”

Return to Silent Hill's Pyramid HeadThe iconic Pyramid Head is stalking hallways once again in Return to Silent Hill.

Silent Hill 2 follows James, a widower who goes to Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his dead wife saying she’s waiting there for him. It’s a slow-paced, atmospheric tale of woe.

During Konami’s showcase, Gans explained, “This return is my return to a world, a universe that I touched in 2006, 15 years ago. The film was a great success, and we decided to go back to the best of these stories: Silent Hill 2.

The film tells the story of a young guy coming back to Silent Hill, where he has known a great love, and what he’s going to find is a pure nightmare.”

The synopsis reads, “When a mysterious letter from his long-lost love calls him back to Silent Hill, James finds a once-recognizable town transformed by an unknown evil. While James desperately searches for Mary, he encounters terrifying creatures and begins to unravel the mystery of what happened to the town.

But as he descends deeper into the darkness the secrets he uncovers lead to a horrifying truth, and James finds himself struggling to hold on long enough to save his one true love.”
