Spider-Man 4, the next chapter for Tom Holland’s wall-crawler in the MCU, is rumored to have a big change behind the camera.
Holland made his debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, zipping into the middle of the action in his “underoos” in one of the most cheer-worthy moments in the movie. While becoming a member of the Avengers, he starred in three films of his own: Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home.
While there were just two years between each movie in the trilogy, we’ll be waiting a little longer for the fourth entry. Late last year, the star said he wouldn’t return to the role for the “sake of making another one” – but it’s definitely in development, with rumors indicating it’ll be a more street-level adventure.
Now, with speculation ramping up about what shape the movie will take, a key creative is reported to have left the sequel.
Jon Watts reportedly leaves Spider-Man 4
Watts, who helmed all three of Holland’s movies in the MCU, isn’t returning to direct Spider-Man 4, according to MyTimeToShineHello.
“I was able to confirm that Jon Watts is not coming back to direct Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4. Who would you like to see directing the film?” the scooper tweeted.

In a 2022 interview with Deadline, Sony chairman Tom Rothman said he “hoped” Watts would come back for the fourth film alongside “the whole group” (Zendaya, Jacob Batalon and co).
Watts was originally attached to direct Fantastic Four, with Deadline also reporting that he “needs a break from the superhero realm” and his exit was “amicable.”
“Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life-changing experience for me. I’m eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I’m hopeful we’ll work together again and I can’t wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life,” he said in a statement.
Last year, insider Daniel Richtman reported that Drew Goddard was a top contender to replace Watts. This would make sense: Spider-Man 4 is rumored to feature Daredevil and Kingpin, and he created the earlier Netflix series.
