Here’s everything we know about Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, including its release date, trailer updates, cast, plot, and more.
In 2018, Into the Spider-Verse swung into our lives and thwipped the big-screen Spider-Man crown. It was an instant superhero classic, built on ground-breaking animation and impeccable music, ultimately giving us a moving origin story for Miles Morales.
Five years later, we’ve just arrived at Across the Spider-Verse, a wondrous, spectacular, amazing (you get the gist) sequel that ends with a whopper of a cliff-hanger, one that’ll send audiences marching out of the cinema in desperate search of answers.
So, here’s what we know about Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse so far. Spoilers to follow!
Is there a Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse release date?
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’s release has been delayed indefinitely, according to a report by Deadline.
The movies’ creators, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, recently spoke to Digital Spy about the movie’s release, in which they basically told fans, “when it is ready”. Obviously things have been delayed due to the recent WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Lord continued, “Those conversations are thankfully above our paygrade, but I can tell you we’re already hard at work on it, and we’ll take the time it takes to make it great.”
Furthermore, a recent report from Vulture cast doubt as to whether the movie would hit its original 2024 release date. Animators reported multiple last-minute changes to renders, with one reportedly saying of Beyond the Spider-Verse “[t]here’s no way that movie’s coming out [in 2024].”
The pair also revealed that this will be the final Miles Morales film they make, with Miller stating to Entertainment Tonight: “That’s it for us. We’re so tired!”
Across the Spider-Verse was originally set for release on April 8, 2022, but it ended up being shifted to October and then June 2023 as a result of global restrictions and other delays.
“We are in the process of being so thankful that we survived making this one, that’s where we’re at,” Dos Santos told Collider.
“I mean, obviously, when we conceptualized it, we broke the story for both of these films, but obviously, this came down to the wire, and I think the immediate priority is to get a little bit of a break for folks. But know that, very much, this is part two of a three-part series that was decided before this was even made, and there will be a third part. That’s pretty much all we can really say.”
Is there a Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse trailer?
No, there’s no trailer for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse yet… but we could see one soon.
The “first look” for Across the Spider-Verse was released all the way back in December 2021, when the original plans for the sequels were to title them Part 1 and 2. We got the first proper trailer a year later, followed by another just a month before its release.
So, we’re expecting a teaser to drop over the next couple of months, but we’ll update this space as soon as it appears online.

We’ll also see the return of Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), Spider-Ham (John Mulaney), and Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn), who reunite with Gwen Stacy at the end of the film to help find Miles.
As Lord stated to Deadline, “All of your favorites are back.”
Lord and Miller also confirmed to Collider that there will be new characters that didn’t appear in the first two movies. “Believe it or not. You thought that you’ve seen every Spider-Person that you could imagine, but not every Spider-Person we can imagine,” Lord said, and Miller added: “We saved several!”

While there hasn’t been any casting announcements, Oscar Isaac wants one other actor to be involved: Pedro Pascal. When asked by GQ about how The Last Of Us Star could fit into the cast of the Spider-Verse, Isaac said, “They’re so brilliant at finding the right person for the right character, but maybe Pedro Pascal. Let’s find something for him. He should be a Spider-Person, like a cranky, old Spider-Person.”
We’ll update this section upon any new announcements about the cast.
Spider-Man Beyond the Spider-Verse plot
This is your final spoiler warning for Across the Spider-Verse.
So, we leave Miles in a pretty sticky situation: he’s stuck on Earth-42 with an evil version of himself – Miles G. Morales – who’s that universe’s Prowler. He was also presumed to be part of the “Sinister Six Cartel”, but thanks to a leak we’ve found out his real background and role in his universe.
According to Lord and Miller, there’s much more to come from this new Miles: “To explore how Miles might have developed if he were in a different world where he didn’t have his father, he was mentored by his uncle, what kind of kid would he be? For people who see Miles G. Morales at the end, don’t judge a book by it’s cover. There’s a lot to learn about that character. It’s a very, very interesting character.”
Powers also told The Hollywood Reporter: “It was such an exciting character, it was actually hard for us to keep it a secret,” Powers says of the alternate Miles. “Oh, man, the design is so different, it’s such a visual departure. And to explore how Miles might have developed if he were in a different world where he didn’t have his father, he was mentored by his uncle, what kind of kid would he be? For people who see Miles G. Morales at the end, don’t judge a book by it’s cover. There’s a lot to learn about that character. It’s a very, very interesting character.
However recently, a leaked page from the official Art of Across the Spider-Verse featured a page describing the Earth-42 Miles Morales, who’s also The Prowler, as a “Vigilante” and grew up completely different from the Earth-1610 version of Miles.
In the book, director of Across the Spider-Verse Justin K. Thompson tells the readers: “Miles comes face to face with this other version of himself and realizes that because one thing dropped the other way, everything has changed due to the ‘butterfly effect’, where one small change can later result in larger changes to a determinstic nonliner system – in this case an entire reality”, as he went on to explain the creative choice to coin the character as Miles G. Morales.
Meanwhile, Spider-Man 2099 and Spider-Woman are working with other members of the Spider Society to track Miles down, as his actions could result in the implosion of several universes – he’s the “original anomaly” in the timeline, so he has to be stopped.
Gwen was thrown out of the group after trying to help Miles, but with the help of Spider-Punk’s -who we’re set to find out more about next time – multiverse-hopping watch, she round reaches out to Peter B. Parker and others to find her friend.
Oh, and that’s before we get to the Spot, who’s hellbent on destroying any and all universes – and his destructive rampage is destined to cause the death of Miles’ father, unless he can stop him. According to voice actor Jason Schwartzman, Spot will be “bigger, badder, holier” in Spider-Verse 3.
Lord and Miller told EW: “Miles’ story is an epic. We wrote what we thought the story needed to be, and to our surprise we realized it was two movies instead of one.”
In a recent interview with Variety, co-directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson spoke about Miles having to deal with a “major, not-so-simple-to-solve problem in the third film.”
“It was really important to have this thing where Miles wants to save his dad, but then he’s faced with this Pottersville version of a world that was created because of this thing that happened to him,” Powers said, referencing what happened to It’s a Wonderful Life’s Bedford Falls without George Bailey.
“It’s not going to be as simple as him wanting to just escape this world. He’s going to try to do right by people who he feels he’s done wrong by, and that just felt more potentially emotional and unpredictable as we go into the third film. It complicates his mission in a way that we hope people find unexpected and also thrilling.”
“The multiverse provides us with these sort of sliding doors,” Dos Santos added.
“It allows us to ask these questions like the head games you play with yourself: ‘If I had done this, instead of that, what happens? How does my life turn out?’ You get to see those things play out on screen.”
In terms of actual specifics, you’re out of luck: the directors and writers are staying mum about the threequel. “To quote Chris Miller: ‘Anything is possible’ is the best way we can answer. We’re just so relieved to have this story done in a way that we’re proud of,” Powers said.
