Spirited Away is arguably the most iconic Studio Ghibli movie of all time – but is it being remade in a TV series for Netflix?
Released in 2001, the original film follows Chihiro as she travels to her new home with her parents. They take a break from their journey and find a dark, mysterious tunnel that leads them to an abandoned amusement park – and it ends up being the gateway to an extraordinary, frightening world.
It was an incredible success, holding the record as Japan’s highest-grossing film until the Demon Slayer movie in 2020. Pixar was so impressed that it convinced Disney to acquire its US distribution rights, eventually grossing nearly $400 million worldwide – not to mention its historic Best Animated Feature win at the Oscars, beating the likes of Ice Age and Lilo & Stitch.
Following The Boy and the Heron’s acclaim, rumor has it that Spirited Away is being reimagined for Netflix – but is it true?
