Stranger Things Season 4 finale trailer teases major deaths

Netflix has dropped an epic trailer for the finale of Stranger Things Season 4. One thing seems certain: death seems likely for one, if not some of our favorite characters. 

We all underestimated the return of Stranger Things. After all, it’d been three years since our last binge of Netflix’s flagship show, and the first teaser trailer came before global restrictions completely shook up every TV and movie release for the foreseeable future.

Season 4 finally arrived on the streaming platform in May, and it has dominated the world. Fans on social media united in their shock over Chrissy’s fate in Episode 1, shops have tried to cater to The Hellfire Club t-shirt craze, and Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill – originally released in 1985 – is the number one song in the UK right now.

However, unlike past chapters, Season 4 went down The Sopranos and Breaking Bad route and split off its final episodes from the rest. With excitement growing each day, we’re now a couple of weeks away from Volume 2, and Netflix has released a new trailer to fan the flames.

The new trailer teases a huge showdown in the finale, with Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) finally learning Vecna’s origins, along with her friends heading off for a fight “they’re not prepared” for, as Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine) warns. According to him, “Hawkins will fall.”

Will (Noah Schnapp) then tells Mike (Finn Wolfhard): “He’s not going to stop. Not until he’s taken everyone.”

It’s clear that the stage is set for a fight against Vecna, both in and outside the Upside Down. We get a few more glimpses of Eddie’s (Joseph Quinn) guitar solo, which he teased in a recent interview. We also see Hopper (David Harbour) facing off against the Demogorgon in Russia, and Eleven standing before a massive explosion.

While Stranger Things hasn’t shied away from death (RIP to Bob and Barb, especially), it’s never possessed the sort of barbaric rug-pulling that we endured in the heyday of Game of Thrones. However, it appears Volume 2 is about to change that.

One moment with a Demogorgon on top of Hopper almost directly mirrors Bob’s demise, so that may be a hint. In another very brief moment, Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) can be seen screaming and seemingly crying out Eddie’s name, so perhaps his guitar solo is his way of going out with a bang.

Some fans have also suggested Max (Sadie Sink) could die, given the events of Volume 1 and the use of Bush’s song. Really, the trailer makes it look like any of them could be killed off, but there’s one prediction that’s become worryingly common in recent weeks: the death of Steve (Joe Keery).

There are a few things to consider. Firstly, the shot of Dustin screaming may actually be in response to Steve’s death. Secondly, Robin (Maya Hawke) even tells him: “I have this terrible feeling it might not work out for us this time.”

So at the very least, Netflix have given us some time to worry about things.
