The Sandman Season 2: Everything we know – cast, plot & more

The King of Dreams is back as Netflix sets the stage for The Sandman Season 2. And it’s time to announce the cast for Endless family members Destiny, Delirium, and The Prodigal.

Neil Gaiman’s seminal comic book had a torturous journey to the screen. Many have tried to adapt it since the 1990s, veering from “the worst script” the author had ever read to Joseph Gordon-Levitt being attached to star in a Sandman movie. In other words, it was in development hell.

As we said in our The Sandman review, Netflix condensed the story’s epic scale and delivered a debut season worthy of the source material’s stature in pop culture.

If you want to know whether to expect Season 2, you’re in luck.

Is there a The Sandman Season 2 release date?

The Sandman Season 2 started production in November 2023, but there’s no release date yet.

We expect Season 2 to stream around late 2024, but there’s no official window confirmed.

“This week we officially restart production on the next sequence of stories of The Sandman for Netflix,” wrote creator Neil Gaiman in a letter to fans in November 2023.

“Genius showrunner Allan Heinberg and the countless people in front of and behind the camera are building something endlessly special, and bringing these stories to life in a way that would once have been unimaginable.”

This news is a big relief, with cancellation rumors swirling following Season 1’s slow-burn release on Netflix.

On Tumblr, a fan asked Gaiman for “a little news” on the next season, to which he gave a lot of news about how development is going. “Scripts are written,” he replied in April 2023. “We are casting the first episode we will be shooting. Sets are being designed.”

Photos emerged of Tom Sturridge back as Morpheus alongside a new character. Fans believe it’s Orpheus, played by Ruairi O’Connor.

The majority of The Sandman cast returns in Season 2, including Tom Sturridge as Morpheus. New actors are joining as the Endless family members and figures from Norse mythology like Thor and Loki.

A new teaser from Netflix showed off a new look at returning members of The Endless. It also featured the first looks at Adrian Lester as Destiny, Esmé Creed-Miles as Delirium, and Barry Sloane as The Prodigal.

There is, of course, always the potential for a Dead Boy Detectives crossover. The series, based on the Vertigo comic of the same name, is set in the same universe as The Sandman and features an appearance from Death.

There are also other gods, demons, and angels, such as The Sandman’s version of Loki and Thor, confirmed by Netflix on July 2, 2024.

The Sandman Season 2 plot

In The Sandman Season 2, “the King of Dreams will come face-to-face — and go toe-to-toe — with the formidable rulers of Hell, Asgard, Faerie, and the realms beyond,” Heinberg told Tudum.

The debut season tied things up nicely, with Rose and Jed back together again after years apart and their great-grandmother sacrificing herself as the Vortex to save the world.

That said, because Rose gave away her heart, she’s unable to love in the comics, so we may see that unfold next time.

Trouble is brewing elsewhere, though. Desire promised to “draw blood” in their next efforts against Morpheus, so expect another cruel scheme from them and Despair.

The season ended with Lucifer promising to do “something that will make God absolutely livid and bring Morpheus to his knees.”

There’s also the matter of whether Morpheus will come for Lyta’s child.

As for Wanda, Gaiman told Tudum, “Wanda began for me in 1988, because I had trans friends and was not seeing them reflected in the comics I was reading, so I resolved to create a trans woman in a mainstream comic, the first time that had happened.”

“For over three decades, people have been telling me that she was an inspiration to them. I’m thrilled that, 35 years later, she’s on the screen in all her glory.”

Is there a trailer for Season 2?

Sadly, there’s no trailer for Sandman Season 2 yet.

If Season 2 arrives in late 2024 or early 2025, we could have a trailer by Fall 2024.
