Toy Story 5 could be the final farewell to Woody, Buzz, and co., so let’s jump into everything Disney has revealed about the sequel.

The world of animated movies changed forever in 1995. Pixar pioneered a new age of filmmaking with computer animation, beginning with its best achievement: Toy Story.

Toy Story 3 and 4 were perfect nostalgic goodbyes to the characters, but like kids with candy, the mouse wants more!

It’s been years since the last film, the prequel spin-off Lightyear. However, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed Toy Story 5 in February 2023. Fans might think 4 was enough, but more adventures are happening regardless.

Toy Story 5 cast

Although Toy Story 5’s cast hasn’t officially been announced, Tim Allen has been vocal about the fact that Disney has approached him about the project.

“They have reached out to Tom [Hanks] and I to reprise the roles. They’re not saying anything about it,” he said on the Tonight Show.

That all sounds promising, and it seems unlikely that Disney would go ahead with a sequel without the voices of Woody and Buzz. Still, we’ll keep you updated with any cast news.

As well as this, characters such as Bo Peep and Bonnie have been all but confirmed to be returning for the next instalment, signifying that the whole gang are likely to also return for the fifth film.

What could the plot be?

It was revealed at D23 that Toy Story 5 will be about the famous toys taking on their biggest challenge to date: technology.

The main tension of the film will focus on Bonnie, the new owner of Woody and company, choosing her iPad over the toys.

Indeed, kids today are obsessed with their gadgets, so Woody and his friends will need to find a way to stay relevant in the new movie.

At D23, Standon said: “In all the Toy Story films, above anything else, the job of the toys is to be there for their kids. And in Toy Story 5, the toys’ jobs get exponentially harder when our toys have to go head-to-head with what our kids are obsessed with today: electronics.”

Woody, Buzz, and Bo Peep in Toy Story 4.

A first-look image revealed showed the toys hiding at the end of a bed, where their child was hiding under the covers and playing with her iPad. This immediately raised questions with fans, who quickly asked: why is Woody back?

As we all remember from Toy Story 4, the cowboy opted to leave his child’s life behind and live on the road with Bo Peep, so this image indicates that he’ll make his way back to the gang somehow.

Villain-wise, it was also revealed that the the gang would be facing off against a horde of malfunctioning Buzz Lightyear toys.

Are there any trailers?

There are no trailers for Toy Story 5 just yet.

We will likely get some in early 2026 shortly before the June release date.

We’ll presumably get a teaser earliest, before multiple full trailers in the ramp-up to the summer premiere. That’s typically how the studio markets new films.

How to watch

Toy Story 5 is expected to be a theatrical exclusive release before coming to Disney+ several months later.

It’s unlikely Disney will cut the legs off its box-office potential by streaming it early. But like its other films, it will land on the streaming service after some time.

This would follow the pattern established by Toy Story 4. It arrived on the platform in February 2020, around eight months after its June 2019 theatrical release.
