In 1996, Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt starred in Jan De Bont’s Twister, one of the best disaster movies of the decade.
Boasting groundbreaking visual effects that are still more effective than today’s CGI, it immersed audiences in the dark side of nature. And it worked, as the film made over $495 million, becoming the second-highest-grossing movie of the year behind Independence Day.
Now a sequel is here (Twisters isn’t a remake), and it’s upping the ante, doubling it, in fact. Twisters will differ from the original in a few ways.
With the storm soon approaching, here’s everything you need to know.
Twisters release date
Twisters comes to theaters on July 17, 2024.
As expected, this release date sets the sequel up as a potential summer juggernaut for the year.
Another Twister movie was first announced in 2020, originally touted as a reboot with Top Gun: Maverick’s Joseph Kosinski set to direct. Kosinski dropped out due to scheduling conflicts with his upcoming Formula 1 sports movie, but he still has a story credit.
Lee Isaac Chung (Minari, Munyurangabo, Abigail Harm) replaced him as director.
Who’s in the cast?
Glenn Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Kiernan Shipka, and Anthony Ramos are in the Twisters cast.

Powell is on the rise, having been in films like Top Gun Maverick and the Anyone But You cast, while co-star Edgar-Jones is most known for the BBC series Normal People.
In the supporting cast, Ramos is recognized from Hamilton and the Transformers franchise. Additionally, Shipka has an impressive filmography because she’s been acting since she was a child, leading Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and 2023’s awesome horror movie Totally Killer.
As for legacy characters, Helen Hunt hoped to return as Dr. Jo Harding, but that didn’t pan out. Hunt pitched a Twister sequel back in 2020 that she hoped to direct, but unfortunately, she revealed that no studio was willing to take her up on it.
Twisters plot
Twisters follows a former storm-chaser, Kate Cooper, (Edgar-Jones) haunted by a devastating experience with a tornado during college.
She’s convinced to get back in action to test an experimental weather alert system when she meets Powell’s storm chaser Tyler Owens, who asks her to rejoin the fray and help his team.
It was originally rumored that Edgar-Jones would play Hunt’s fictional daughter, but this was debunked. Screenwriter Mark L. Smith said, “It’s a separate story. It’s not a continuation of the original. It’s a real wild ride with some good, fun characters. Hopefully, we can tap into what the original had because that thing is just iconic.
Twisters trailer
Universal Pictures released a Twisters trailer on February 12, 2024.
We have to admit, any hesitation we had about Twisters was pulled up into the swirling skies after this footage. It’s heart-pounding, slightly hammy, boasts great VFX, and is full of likeable stars.
