Fans have been divided over whether one major death is going to be explored in Season 7, but now Young Sheldon creators have “confirmed” they will.
Even though Young Sheldon has been on the air since 2017, it has frequently come under fire for its inconsistencies with main series, 2007’s The Big Bang Theory.
Now that the hit prequel has reached its seventh and final season, fans are still debating what direction the show is going to take, needing to wrap up some essential plotlines to fit with existing lore.
While many have decided that one major death won’t be explicitly shown in Season 7, Young Sheldon creators have officially confirmed that the subject will be tackled head-on.
Young Sheldon creators confirm big Season 7 death
According to Young Sheldon executive producer Steve Holland, Season 7 is “confirmed” to explore the upcoming death of George Cooper Snr.
For fans of The Big Bang Theory, George’s death won’t come as a surprise. Through the eyes of adult Sheldon, we learn that his father died when he was 14 years old, which is exactly the age Sheldon is at the beginning of Season 7.
Even so, fans have been undecided whether George’s death will be explicitly shown on screen or not, with some fans musing that George’s death could be pushed closer to Sheldon and Missy’s 15th birthday to avoid the subject completely.

Speaking to TV Line, Steve Holland stated: “I don’t want to say what you will or won’t see, but things will get addressed. We are not beholden to every joke that was ever made on The Big Bang Theory, but we do feel beholden to the larger canon and the larger events that shape Sheldon’s life. We want to honor those.”
Continuing on to confirm that George’s death is included in Season 7, Holland further explained: “Absolutely not. That is a thing that happens in Sheldon’s life. This is the same character [from Big Bang]. We are living in the same universe as Big Bang and that sort of world-building is important. Big things that [Adult Sheldon said] happened in his life without a doubt happened.”
Whether fans actually want this to happen in Young Sheldon Season 7 however, is another matter.
“It will be really sad to watch but I’m interested in seeing how the family moves on from his death. We all know Sheldon’s story because of TBBT. I’m invested in the rest of the family now and want to know more about their stories,” one Redditor described.
Young Sheldon Season 7 begins airing on February 15, 2024.
