Team Liquid’s Yiliang ‘DoubleLift’ Peng got emotional after his team was again eliminated from LoL Worlds during the group stage.
Playing in a group with kt Rolster, Edward Gaming, and MAD Team, TL put up a good fight but an early loss to Edward Gaming put them on the back foot early in groups.
With Edward Gaming’s victory over kt Rolster – who was otherwise undefeated in the group – Liquid’s fate was sealed.
Doublelift is undoubtedly one of the best North American LoL players but his history with the group stage in Worlds has been one of heartbreak.
His team has qualified for Worlds six out of the eight possible years and every season since 2015.
Since Riot expanded Worlds to 16 teams, his team has never made it past the group stage despite being close every year.
This year was no different and an emotional DoubleLift reflected on his play this year after the game.

“It’s unacceptable that I go to Worlds every year as the first seed and I shit the bed. I never perform and my team never makes it out of groups,” Doublelift said. “Its been eight years and I can’t do this thing but I’m never going to give up.”
This year Liquid went 3-3 and that record represents a barrier that Doublelift just hasn’t been able to break.
At Worlds 2017 and 2016 he went 3-3 while competing for TSM. At Worlds 2015 he went 2-4 while competing for CLG.
In every one of those years, his team won the NA LCS Summer Playoffs in convincing fashion. This year was no different and it has to be tough to see Cloud9, the team they beat 3-0 in September, advance to the knockout stage while Liquid must watch on Twitch again.
